Empty Nest

The day came.  Actually it all happened over a couple of days.  Days that contained both happiness and sadness.

The first baby to leave the nest, did so by hopping all around the yard and then under the fence into the neighbor’s yard.  I wasn’t too worried about him because I could still see the parents feeding him and I knew the neighbors didn’t have any dogs or cats that roamed around in their yard.  I figured he would be safe there.  Later that evening, he was back in my yard.  The last time I saw him, he was headed to the fence again, hopping and flapping his wings.  I’m pretty sure he finally got off the ground and took to the skies.  He seemed to have the desire to fly.

Outta Here

The second of the three was a little slower getting started. It was the next day that he made his move.  He had a little bit of a hard time getting out of the tree.  He made it about half way down, and then held on to a branch for quite a while before making that final leap.  Once down, he also hopped all over the back yard but when he went under the fence, he headed for the front yard.  This concerned me a bit for his safety, but when I finally found him, he had found a new spot, nestled in the hedge at the front of the house.  Not only that, one of the parents was also present, feeding him.  Seeing how he made it to the top of the hedge, I’m certain that he has developed the skills needed to leave as well.  This morning when I checked, there was no sigh of him or the parent.  Fly free little buddy.

Clumsy

The third little guy…well, he didn’t make it.  It was very sad, but I had a feeling from the past couple of days that something was wrong.  He just wasn’t as big as his siblings, and also didn’t seem to have the energy or strength.  I watched as the parents kept feeding him, hoping that he would have a growing spurt, but it never happened.  He just wasn’t growing.  I know that is how nature works and all, but it was still sad.  So long little buddy.

Little One

So thus ends my adventure with the baby robins.  They came and went just like that, but not without leaving a mark.

Breakfast

Today I got up to spend breakfast with the Robins.  Being a holiday weekend, I was worried that all the activity around the pool would bother the birds, but they seem to be pretty acclimated to humans.  In fact, the Cardinals seem quite put out that we were out there and actually did a fly-by right past my head at one point.  Glad we’re not scaring them away, especially since they just started coming here.

So I get set up, and here comes the parent.  (I wish I could figure out how to tell the difference between the male and female robin.)  It’s breakfast time!

Mine!

I guess there is one in every family.  The most aggressive one that gets their way before the others.  This little guy seems to be the one in this one. He seems quite able to push the other two out of the way to get first dibs on whatever mom and dad bring to the nest.  Of course, since I can’t tell them apart, maybe they actually are taking turns.  Smile

Yum!

Then finally, after stuffing himself on this huge worm that looks like there is no way that whole thing would fit inside that little bird, it’s nap time.  No more chirping for mom and dad, just a nap.  Peace and quite…

Contentment

Quiet…at least until the grand-kids decide it is time to play in the pool!  Smile

A Park Kind of Saturday

It’s been a while since Karen and I got to go out and “play” with our cameras, but this past Saturday, we had eye appointments over in Richardson TX and thought we would pay a visit to the Prairie Trail park while we were there.  It had been a while since we had been there before and the weather was supposed to be clear, so why not.  The thing we forgot about though, was the fact that our eyes would be dilated from the eye doctor!  Man was the sun bright that day!

But we didn’t let that stop us.  It was still a good day out with my beautiful wife.  We had been here before to photograph the waterfall, but to our surprise, they also have a field full of wildflowers!  Neither of us had seen that.  So we had a bonus.

If you are in or around Richardson, the park can be found here

Enjoy… We did!
